An Introduction To The iPod

The Apple iPod was introduced to the world in 2001 as an MP3 player. The latest iPod models can store up to 160 GB of data and not only can play music but also display games, photos and movies.

The smaller iPod models store the digital media on flash drives but the latest classic models can store media on their own hard drive.
The flagship iPod model is the Classic, the 2007 release being an 80 GB or 160 GB portable media center. The 160 GB iPod can store up to 40,000 songs and supports MP3, AIFF, AAC, WAV, Apple Lossless and Audible audio files.

There are also the premium models – the iPod Touch and the iPhone. The iPod Touch looks like an iPhone as it has the multi-touch user interface and there is Wi-Fi wireless networking. The iPod nano is a mid-range model with a 2 inch display screen and can play video files. One can play feature films, music videos, TV shows as well as movies from your own DVD collection. The third generation iPod nano has a wider screen and can also play video. The iPod shuffle is the low range model with no display screen.

The iPod’s popularity is due to its small size and the easy navigation through the menus using the click wheel. The other attractive feature is the built-in iTunes store which makes media purchasing and downloading so simple. The iTunes Store provides music, games, podcasts, movies, music videos and audio books within a few easy steps.

The iTunes software is loaded on to a computer and does a brilliant job in downloading, organizing, converting and playing the files you want. You don’t necessarily need to download all your songs from the iTunes store – you can also download from other (legal) download sites or rip tracks from your CD collection. You still need to use the iTunes software though to transfer these files from your computer to the iPod. The same applies to games – the iPod comes with pre-loaded games, but other games can be downloaded from the iTunes store as well as from other legitimate download sites.
